Car insurance for teens
Most of our customers add their teen drivers to their policies, and for good reason. It’s usually much more affordable and easier to manage.
Advantages of adding your teen to your policy
You can share cars:
You’ll be covered if your teen drives your car and vice versa. All covered drivers have access to all vehicles on the policy.
Make sure they’re properly covered:
You’ll easily be able to see, add, and update their coverages.
Multi car discount:
The expense of insuring a young driver can be offset by a multi car discount if your teenager has their own vehicle. Progressive and many other insurers offer this discount. *
Good student discount:
Many insurers offer good student discounts. Progressive’s Good Student Discount (for having a B average or better) is only available when a student is added to a family member’s policy, and will not apply if they are on their own. *

How coverages work with teenagers
Here’s a refresher on common coverage situations if you combine policies
Your teenager drives your car and damages it
It should be covered if you added comprehensive or collision for your car. You’ll just have to pay the deductible. FYI: You add comprehensive and collision specific to each car, not each driver.
You drive your teenager’s car and damage it
Similar to above, it should be covered if comprehensive and collision were added.
Your teenager drives your car and hits someone else
They’re typically covered. If they’re at fault, any damages they cause to other cars, property (mailboxes, phone poles, etc.), and others’ injuries are usually covered by bodily injury and property damage liability. This coverage comes standard and extends to all drivers on the policy, no matter what car they’re driving. The same limits apply.
You drive your teenager’s car and hit someone else
Exact same coverage situations as above.
How coverages work if you have separate policies: Your coverages would work similarly, but certain accidents can be more complicated. For example, your teenager is driving your car and hits someone else (meaning your teen is at fault). There are two separate claims here damages they cause to others and damages to your car. Which company will handle and pay each claim will vary based on the circumstances and terms of each policy.
Complicated, right? That’s another reason why it’s usually easier to combine policies if you’re driving the same cars. Remember, if your teenager is driving your car on a regular basis, then they’ll be required to be on your policy anyway.

FAQs for teen car insurance
How much is car insurance for teens?
While teenagers usually drive fewer miles than adults, they are not as experienced and more likely to be in an accident. Plus, they have a greater tendency to speed, tailgate, and not wear a seatbelt. This all means higher rates. The exact price will vary based primarily on ZIP code, driving history, location, and type of vehicle.
Will the rate drop when my teen turns 18 or 21 years old?
At Progressive, drivers’ rates drop by an average of 10% when they turn 18 and another 16% at 21. As your teenager becomes more experienced and avoids tickets and accidents, the price should keep going down. Remember, teen drivers are also eligible for the Good Student Discount and can participate in Progressive’s Snapshot program, which decreases the rate for safe, low mileage drivers. †

Is it ever more affordable for my teen to have a separate policy?
Rarely. But, if you drive an expensive sports or luxury car, it may be cheaper for your teenager to have their own policy.
Help! My teenager received a permit and is learning to drive. What’s my next step?
Let us know about the new driver in your family. Good news! There’s no charge to add a permit driver to your Progressive policy! But we will begin to rate the driver when they obtain a permanent license.
What happens when my child goes to college?
Your college student can be covered on your policy as long as your address is still considered to be their primary residence. If your child will have a car on campus, you’ll need to let your insurer know the ZIP code where the vehicle will be kept the majority of the time.
There are some states in which you cannot cover their car on your policy if they’re going to an out-of-state college. In that case, your son or daughter would have to purchase their own policy.
